Black Light Screen Saver 1.7 (73 Kb)
- Screen saver module for Mac OS X; October 10, 2009.
Description
With Black Light you can apply a combination of visual effects to your screen by manipulating the gamma curve. Opening Black Light will automatically apply the selected effects. Quiting the application will restore the original settings. Clicking on the Black Light icon in the dock will activate and deactivate the selected effect combination.
With the screen saver you can apply similar effects. Black Light is a “transparent” screen saver, in other words you can still see what’s going on behind while the visual effects are applied.
Application
The Black Light application gives you the choice of one or more of these effects:
- Invert Screen
- Reverse blacks and whites, giving you a negative image on your screen.
- Hide Stripes
- Replace white grays with white to remove stripes in user interface from older versions of Mac OS X.
- HDTV Luminance Adjustment
- Adapt image for the 16–235 luminance range used by some high-definition television sets when connected by HDMI. Normally, your computer should be capable of automatically adusting output values accordingly, but this isn’t always possible when the TV is connected through an adapter.
- Dim Screen
- Reduce screen luminosity by dimming each pixel. Useful to reduce the luminosity of LCD screens beyound the minimal value of the back light.
- Color Filter
- Simulation of a color filter of a given color in front of the screen.
Screen Saver
The screen saver is capable of one or more of the following effects:
- Invert Screen
- Reverse blacks and whites, giving you a negative image on your screen.
- Hide Stripes
- Replace white grays with white to remove stripes in user interface from older versions of Mac OS X.
- Dim Screen
- Reduce screen luminosity by dimming each pixel.
- Color Deviation
- Impregnate mid tones with rotating colors.
- Pulse
- Make the whole screen darker and lighter.
- Color Filter
- Simulation of a color filter of a given color in front of the screen, with color rotation.
Known issues
When another application has changed the gamma curve of the screen, or when some displays wake from sleep, the Black Light effect may disappear. This also happend with most of the screen savers. You may click again on Black Light’s icon to reactivate the effect immediately.
If the “Continously reapply effect” is checked in the preferences, the effect will be reapplied automatically after a few seconds. This is active by default.
The mouse pointer sometimes get the effect applied to it, but not always. This can vary depending on the video card of your computer and the way an application change the cursor on screen.
Unfortunately, the screensaver cannot really be transparent when the computer is set to ask a password on wakeup.
Version History

The screen saver is now working correctly with Mac OS 10.6 on a 64-bit Intel processor.
Black Light 1.6 (6 March 2006)
Improved the inversion algorithm to respect the gamma correction curve in use on the screen. Previously the gamma correction was inverted when the colors were, the correction was applied in reverse and could make gray levels appear coloured.
